Activity 1

LESSON 1 - WHAT IS SINGLE CAMERA PRODUCTION

TASK 1

Task 1: Understanding 'single camera production'

  1. Define 'single camera production':
A single camera production is a media production in which all the scenes of the project are shot with one
camera and no multi-camera setups are used. This camera production is also never shot live and requires a lot
of editing and time to shoot as not all aspects of a scene can be seen with the use of one camera angle.

b) Identify the advantages and disadvantages of single camera production (refer to examples where you can):

Advantages

  • Cost effective.
  • More control of the scene you are shooting.
  • All actors do not have to be on set during the shoot as the shots can be planned.
Disadvantages

  • Editing can be time consuming.
  • A lot of repetition is required in order to the correct shot.
  • The actors reactions aren’t realistic as scenes only one actor can be filmed at a time in a close up shot.

  1. What is multi camera production
A multi-camera production is a camera setup used to film television programs and films in which multiple cameras are set-up in various different angles in order to capture an entire scene.

How does multi-camera differ to single camera productions?
In a multi-camera production several cameras are used to film from various different angle setups whereas in a single camera production the filming team only uses one camera for the entire project, this means many scenes will have to be retaken in order to capture everything.

d) List 3 examples of single camera shows/films (aim for different genres)

1) The Inbetweeners

2) Red Dwarf

3) The Weird Al Show

List 3 examples of multi-camera shows (aim for different genres)

1) Brooklyn Nine-Nine

2) BoJack Horseman

3) Silicon Valley

e) What is the definition of genre? Why is this important for audiences?

A Genre is a category or style of a film in which different types of films that have similar narratives and characteristics are based together, e.g Comedy. This is important for audiences as it offers them a variety of different film types in which they can choose from. This also helps to market the film as gives people an understanding of the feel of the film.
